Faith & Fitness

1 Timothy 4:8 – “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
What is Faith & Fitness?
Faith & Fitness is a health and fitness approach that works to put God at the centre of our health and fitness journey.

Shaped in Ways that Harm Us

In a world where trends and social pressures are increasingly influential and complex, it is easy to be shaped in ways that harm rather than help. We can become negatively concerned with how we look and what others think about us. This can lead to unhealthy thinking, beliefs, values, and behaviours, such as persistent negative self-talk, pride, compulsive self-weighing, disordered eating patterns, and so forth. Over time, these behaviours can damage our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, often reinforcing further unhealthy behaviours. This is why in our flawed state as human beings, it is vital that we battle and strive against the harmful things in our lives. And although in this we will have victories and failures, to continue the war is to fulfil our walk with God.

Trends and Social Influences

Trends and social influences are not always harmful. When healthy, they can benefit both individuals and communities, for example, being surrounded by people who value wellbeing and encourage one another toward healthier lifestyles. The benefits of good health extend beyond ourselves, as they positively impact our families, friendships, and wider communities.

God as our Priority

Christians are wise to recognise that certain cultural pressures and trends can draw us away from the wholeness God intends for us spiritually, physically, and psychologically. When physical appearance, status, or self-gratification take priority over faith and the fruits that come from it, we move out of alignment with God. True health is not merely aesthetic or performance-based. It is rooted in alignment of body, mind, and spirit - ordered rightly under faith.

Importance of Heath and Fitness

It is important to be strong, fit, and healthy. Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, and disciplined lifestyle habits significantly increase our likelihood of living longer, healthier lives. They improve our physical capacity, cognitive function, and emotional resilience, enabling us to carry out daily responsibilities, care for our families, perform effectively in our professional roles, and fully enjoy recreational pursuits. A well-conditioned body is also more resistant to many chronic diseases and better equipped to recover from illness or injury. Strength and fitness enhance functional independence and increase our ability to respond to physically demanding or stressful circumstances.

Navigate Limitations

Of course, internal and external limitations can form hurdles and barriers. Internal limitations may include injury, illness, reduced mobility, or contradictory bad habits and behaviours. External limitations may include demanding work schedules, family responsibilities, other life pressures, or unhealthy influences. The key is not ignoring these limitations, but working intelligently within and around them. With the right structure, guidance, and planning, progress and amazing results are still possible.

Exploring Faith & Fitness...

What Does the Bible Say About Health and Physicality?

The Bible does not mention health and fitness as we understand it in this day and age; however being healthy and fit in Biblical times was valued, understood, encouraged, and sort after.

Samson's incredible Strength

Samson, divinely chosen to deliver Israel Judges 13-16, was blessed by God with physical strength as one of his greatest weapons. In Judges 16: 5 Samson's enemies understood the challenge of such as man, where Scripture says: "The rulers of the Philistines went to her [Delilah] and said "See if you can lure him into the showing you the secret of his great strength and how we can overpower him so we may tie him up and subdue him."

King David's Strength from God

In Psalm 18:32–34 , David writes: “It is God who arms me with strength…He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” Here, strength, including physical and martial capability, is portrayed as a gift from God, enabling endurance, skill, and preparedness.

Noble Woman's Character

In Proverbs 31:10-31, describing a woman of noble character, Proverbs 31:17 says: “She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” The verse expressed mental and physical capability in fulfilling daily responsibilities was highly valued and attractive.

Enjoy God Health

3 John 1:2, John writes: “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” This reflects that physical health was regarded as a legitimate good, worthy of prayer alongside spiritual well-being.

Body is the Temple

In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20., Paul writes: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Although the context concerns sexual morality, the broader theological principle affirms that the body is of great importance.

Paul's Analogy for Spiritual Training

1 Corinthians 9:24–27, Paul uses athletic training as a positive analogy: “Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training…” Athletic preparation is presented as disciplined and intentional, illustrating perseverance and self-control are important qualities Christians should have and develop.

Godliness and Exercise

In 1 Timothy 4:8, Paul writes: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things…” Paul acknowledges that bodily training has real benefit, while emphasizing that spiritual formation carries greater and eternal significance.
